Want to get involved?

If you have never volunteered before, we can support you in finding local opportunities. No matter what you like doing or what your experience is, we will find you something that interests you and fits around the time you have free.

To register with BHV: send us an email or phone the office to arrange a time to come and see us.

Application form with BHV and checking out volunteering that’s available:

After completing a short registration form and a volunteer development plan, you can then have a look through our opportunities file. With hundreds of placements to choose from there is something to suit everyone. When you have chosen one you might be interested in, we will support you in contacting the placement and help you to get involved.

Recruitment within the organisation:

Different placements have different recruitment processes. It’s a good opportunity for you to discuss the role in more detail and learn more about the organisation. Some placements will have an informal meeting, others an application form. How formal the recruitment process is, often depends on the nature of the volunteering work that you are interested in.

Starting to volunteer:

When you begin volunteering, your placement should provide you with an induction to the organisation and volunteering role. This should also include health and safety and fire emergency procedures.

The placement should allocate a member of staff to act as your volunteer co-ordinator. Depending on your volunteering role, you may have regular supervisions or be able to gain support from this person should any issues arise.

Getting your certificate:

Once you are volunteering, you then simply log your hours in the book provided. If you volunteer for 50 hours in a year you can receive the national v50 certificate, if you volunteer for fewer hours we can provide you with the national vthankyou certificate.

Training:

We can also help you to find free training, which will relate to your chosen area of volunteering.

Celebration:

We hold an annual celebration event (party time!). This is free for all Brighton and Hove Volunteers. There is food and music and the opportunity to have fun with other volunteers and members of the BHV.

This celebration is also where, if you wish, you can have your v certificate presented to you. In previous years we have had dub and house DJ’s, bands (including a winner of the Radio One’s New Bands competition), theme nights and free prizes.
